Mining Towns
Somewhere in the past or present
did we take in the morning sun
an island or a beach and the sand
followed us into the shower?
I watched you bathe and felt your hands
again. I remember as you do the dishes
water the lawn
Once accustomed to being heard
now a faint noise in the distance
of your new life I try to vaporize
the barriers in metaphysic light--
algorithms of time and space
a theory of heavenly bodies
in alignment
What attractions persist
beyond the reach of their origin
untimely bursts of energy
sublime in their unrealized gain...
the distance between two hearts
so tropically inclined as they travel
through the solstice
Apparition in her faraway gaze
she sees what she wants to see
glazed bowls a shelf of masks
tomatoes and a new carafe--
she fills the bowls with pebbles
to take them away in the evening
that treasured time
