18 dramatic situations

(based on Polti's 36 as relayed by Goethe who credits Carlo Gozzi who claims they relate to 36 basic emotions)


1. Old guy turns around twice to retrieve funny looking ball.

2. If you are not going to take off, then please go.

3. Tying a scarf to the stairway, she pulls on her dress and pretends to giggle.

4. Nimble and not that large, the teenager enters with her parasol unfolded, folds it, unfolds it, waves 3 times.

5. Out of nowhere, a large bird-like sculpture jumps through the audience and onto the stage, screeching.

6. A tuba, a small drum, 2 violins, and a mandolin alternate a chord and change place.

7. Someone in red, someone in white, someone in blue, someone in black, someone in gray, someone in yellow--all holding banners.

8. Checkered cab logo descends from ceiling and lands on large woman practicing yoga.

9. Crowns of another time are arranged on a large table and turned upside down by a thin stage hand.

10. people are invited to toss coins into the crowns.

11. A ballroom dancer and her escort
 take a turn around the stage and a set of mirrors are hit by a croquet ball tossed by two women dressed as cats.

12. Negative ion machines are set up near a smoke bomb and turned off and on as a small firecracker is continually launched.

13. After a girl and boy are admonished by an adult, the rain begins to fall onto a tin roof and they try not to laugh too loudly.

14. Around a table, some melons are set up to be cut by a professional looking chef.

15. Two ghostly presences are ushered in on a luggage rack, and asked if they are hungry.

16. A flag of the planet Saturn is planted in a child's plastic pool and saluted by 2 soldiers dressed as if off duty.

17.  "Anytime you want to go out I am ready," says a matronly woman who appears to wear a set of keys and a nurse's hat.

18. One by one, the characters parade by the audience and say the names of the scenes they wish they had played.
